The Catlins
Greenbush is situated at the gateway to one of New Zealand’s regions of remote natural scenic beauty, the Catlins. The Catlins is full of natural wonders to
share –Curio Bay petrified forest, spectacular towering caves known as Cathedral Caves, a giant blowhole called Jack’s Blowhole, magnificent waterfalls including Purakauni Falls, and the
majestic beauty of Nugget Point and its lighthouse.
Sweeping beaches, rugged coastlines, formidable cliffs, protected rainforests alive with native birds and delicate ecosystems. These natural Catlins delights
are set against a backdrop of rural heartland New Zealand and an uncomplicated and unhurried pace of life.
Forests are home to 28 species of ferns, perching plants, orchids, vines, seedlings and podocarp trees like the mighty Rimu, Totara, Matai, Kahikatea and Miro.
The endangered Hoiho (Yellow-eyed penguin) is a living symbol in the Catlins. Other wildlife includes Hector’s dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, the Hooker
sea lion and the formidable Elephant seal. An abundance of native birdlife lives in forests, and along the coast and river edges.
